Amnesty International Faults Tinubu Administration for Allowing Rampant Human Rights Violations

Amnesty International, on Wednesday, launched a human rights agenda, calling for the Nigerian government to tackle the myriad human rights crimes in the country. President Bola Tinubu has failed to checkmate the human rights issues in the country six months after he assumed office, according to Isa Sanusi, Director of Amnesty International Nigeria.

The group documented cases of brazen human rights crimes perpetrated by both state and non-state actors which have remained ignored for years. Armed groups launch ruthless attacks on defenseless citizens in various parts of the country. “The Nigerian authorities have failed to bring an end to these deadly attacks,” it said.

Similarly, Nigerian security forces violate human rights laws by extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, and incommunicado detention, amongst others which are usually overlooked by the authorities, Amnesty International reported. Above all, victims of these human rights violations continue to be denied access to justice and effective remedies.

The human rights group urged Tinubu to redeem the integrity of his nascent government by ensuring that “everyone is able to fully and effectively enjoy their human rights, but also to hold perpetrators of past rights violations to account.”
