Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio said Nigerians are protesting against the state of the country’s economy because they were ignorant of the grand plans of President Tinubu’s government.
There have been street protests across Nigeria since last week over the high cost of living occasioned by the removal of the gas subsidy.
The umbrella body of Nigerian workers, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has also declared a two-day work stoppage to voice their frustration with the government.
Akpabio says these protests, which reflect a growing discontent among the populace with Tinubu’s administration, were “sponsored”.
“You can see sponsored protests here and there. Those people are not aware. Most of those sponsored protests are not aware of the kind of efforts made by this Senate together with the Federal Government to tackle this situation,” he said during plenary on Tuesday.
The Senate President noted that the authorities are working round the clock to ameliorate the harsh economic condition. “Wherever we can find food to put on the tables of Nigerians, we will do so,” Akpabio said.
