Two policemen on escort duty were on Saturday beaten to death by a group of irate youths in Edo State, Nigeria. Two other officers were seriously wounded.
The mob descended on the policemen after they ran over a commercial motorbike, killing the driver along with a woman and her child.
An alarm was raised by eyewitnesses as angry youths ran to the scene of the accident. The policemen then fled to a nearby vigilante (civilian guards) office for safety.
The mob attacked the office, overpowered the local guards, and dragged several officers out. They beat them until two policemen dropped dead. The vigilantes were able to rescue two others from the hands of their attackers.
