The Nigerian military has set its sights on a wanted man, ramping up their fight against terrorism in the north. Halilu Buzu, a Nigerien national, was declared wanted on Thursday, May 16th, 2024, by Major General Edward Buba, spokesperson of Abuja’s Defence Headquarters.
The announcement, made during a press briefing in Abuja, accuses Buzu of a multitude of crimes plaguing Nigeria’s Zamfara State. Terrorism, illegal arms trafficking, involvement in illegal mining, and cattle rustling are among the charges against him.
Authorities believe Buzu operates from a base camp within Zamfara, exploiting its proximity to the Niger border to evade capture. He is suspected of carrying out attacks in Nigeria before escaping back to Niger.
“He is a high-value target, and we hereby declare him wanted. Furthermore, he is a major arms supplier, trusted by arms dealers supplying arms from Libya,” Buba told the press. “We have been on his trail, and whenever we close in on him, he bolts across the border into the Republic of Niger for refuge.”
Seeking public assistance, the military is calling on anyone with information on Buzu’s whereabouts to come forward. Confidentiality and a reward are assured for any tip leading to his arrest.
