Nigeria’s Presidential Villa, also known as Aso Rock, is facing questions after a report by Daily Trust revealed that a staggering N244,654,350 (U.S.$161,471) was spent on tires in a single day.
The investigation, which utilized data from govspend, a portal documenting presidential villa expenditure, showed these purchases were logged on May 21st, 2024, a few days before the first anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration on May 29th.
The breakdown of the spending shows N200,583,390 (U.S. $132,385) on unspecified quantities of tires for bulletproof vehicles, N38,070,000 (U.S.$25,126) for five armored bulletproof tires, and N6,000,960 (U.S.$3,960.6) for regular tires.
The report further highlights that Obi-Wealth Enterprises Nigeria Limited, the recipient of two separate payments totalling N238,653,390 (U.S.$157,511.2) for the bulletproof tires, is listed as inactive on the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) website.
This news has Nigerians scratching their heads. Public concerns center on transparency and responsible use of government funds. President Tinubu’s office has yet to comment on the matter.
