Fire at Dangote Refinery in Lagos: Quick Response Prevents Major Damage

A fire broke out at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in the Lekki Free Zone in Lagos, Nigeria, on June 26, 2024. The blaze appeared at the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) of the Dangote Refinery, generating a thick dark smoke that could be seen from a distance, causing panic and evacuation in the area.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the incident, with firefighters and rescue teams rushing to the scene to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the refinery. According to local media, the fire was intense, but the quick response of the emergency services helped to prevent more extensive damage.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and the fire was successfully contained, according to a statement released by the Dangote Group. The management called the incident a “minor fire.”

The Dangote Refinery, one of the largest in Africa, was inaugurated in May 2023 and began operations in early 2024. The refinery is expected to meet 100 percent of Nigeria’s oil needs and export surplus products, and any disruption to its operations could have far-reaching consequences.
