President Bola Tinubu suffered a fall on Wednesday while boarding the parade vehicle at the Democracy Day celebration at Eagle Square, Abuja. June 12th is Democracy Day in Nigeria. The President is in company with many world leaders who have slipped on stairs down from or up to waiting aircraft: President Joe Biden (3 times); Vice President Mike Pence; Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Gerald Ford.
According to viral videos on social media, the President missed his footing while climbing onto the parade truck and had to be helped up by his security details.
Despite the incident, President Tinubu quickly regained his balance and continued with the proceedings.
In response to the public outburst the fall generated, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, urged Nigerians to stop making it a big issue.
He stated that President Tinubu is only human and not a superman, citing examples of other political leaders who have also experienced slips in public. “Political leaders are human. Slipping should not detract from the import of Democracy Day celebration,” Onanuga added.
