Nigeria is making history by partnering with the US-based Space Exploration and Research Agency (SERA) to send its first citizen to space! The country’s National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) and SERA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Abuja on Wednesday, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s 25-year space exploration journey.
According to NASRDA’s Director General, Mathew Adepoju, this partnership will make it possible for a Nigerian astronaut to receive training and launch into space. This is all part of Nigeria’s National Space Policy and Programme (NSPP), which aims to promote space exploration and development in the country.
Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, says he is thrilled about the partnership, saying it will inspire a new generation of scientists and engineers in Nigeria. He also highlighted the benefits of space exploration, including the development of critical technologies and infrastructure.
SERA’s co-founder, Joshua Skurla, expressed his agency’s commitment to making space accessible to all, especially in countries that have been underrepresented in space exploration. He praised Nigeria’s rich history of scientific and technological innovation and expressed excitement about the partnership.
“We are honored to partner with NASRDA to extend this legacy into space and create new opportunities for Nigerian space explorers,” Skurla said.
