President Bola Tinubu has approved a significant raise in the minimum wage for Nigerian workers, increasing it from N30,000 (U.S.$21) to N70,000 (U.S.$49). This announcement follows months of demands from labor unions for a new minimum wage of N250,000 (U.S.$177) due to the rising cost of living
Ajuri Ngelale, the President’s spokesperson, stated that the minimum wage will now be reviewed every three years. According to Ngelale, Tinubu’s decision underscores his commitment to improving the welfare of Nigerian workers.
“No one in the federal establishment should earn less than N70,000,” Ngelale quoted the President.
Labor unions, led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have welcomed the new minimum wage, having engaged in strikes and protests to press for this change.
