Nigeria’s military high command has issued a stern warning to those calling for the ouster of President Bola Tinubu’s government, describing the demands as “treasonable.” The military vowed to take legal action if such calls persist.
The warning follows a viral video showing protesters blocking military vehicles and urging the military to seize power, citing economic hardships caused by the removal of fuel subsidies and the naira’s devaluation.
Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defense Information, denounced the demands, accusing the protesters of trying to destabilize the country. “Those advocating for a military takeover, as seen in a viral video, should be aware that such actions are treasonable under the constitution,” Gusau said.
He stressed that the military had no reason to intervene, crediting President Tinubu’s support for the current stability. “The relative peace being enjoyed today is a direct result of the President’s support for the military and the dedication of the Armed Forces of Nigeria leadership,” he added.
Gusau reaffirmed the military’s loyalty to the Tinubu administration and its commitment to democracy. “The military remains focused on protecting the nation’s integrity and will act against anyone promoting unconstitutional changes,” he warned.
