Nigerian Troops Kill 140 Terrorists, Arrest 135 Suspects

Nigerian troops killed 140 terrorists and arrested 135 suspects across the country over the past week, according to Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations.

Buba told reporters Thursday in Abuja that two key members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) were among those arrested. IPOB is a separatist group in southeastern Nigeria advocating for an independent state of Biafra.

Pius Iguh, a founding member of the group’s militant arm, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), was arrested in Orsu, Imo State. Another commander, Emmanuel Onwugu, was apprehended in Mbano, Abia State.

Buba added that 18 oil thieves were arrested in the Niger Delta, with stolen crude oil worth ₦1.7 billion ($1,034,465.97) recovered. Troops destroyed 47 illegal refineries and seized over one million litres of crude oil.

Additionally, 241 weapons, 3,254 rounds of ammunition, and cash totalling ₦79 million ($48,072.24) were confiscated. Troops also rescued 76 kidnapped hostages.
