The Nigerian government is urging its citizens in Lebanon to evacuate amid a worsening conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Despite warnings and embassy efforts, only about 500 Nigerians have registered for evacuation, though over 2,000 reside in the country.
“Even though most of them have not indicated a willingness to return home in spite of the persuasion by our embassy, we will continue to do everything to ensure the safety of our citizens,” said Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The government has activated emergency protocols and is arranging a C-130 or other available flights to facilitate the evacuation from Beirut. This follows the relocation of many Nigerians from conflict-heavy southern Lebanon.
Officials stressed the importance of cooperation, urging Nigerians to register with the embassy (info@mfa.gov.ng) and not resist evacuation efforts. The Nigerian government vowed to monitor the situation closely as Israeli airstrikes continue to escalate in Lebanon.
