Nigerian Army senior officer, Brigadier General Gabriel Olufemi Esho, has become the first Nigerian appointed as Deputy Force Commander of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), marking a significant milestone for Nigeria and Africa in global-peacekeeping efforts.
Brigadier General Esho took over from Commodore Faustina Boakyewwa Anokye, an officer in the Ghanaian Navy. The Nigerian Army (NA) in a statement on Sunday described the appointment as a “ground-breaking moment for Nigeria and the African continent.”
“As the first Nigerian to stand tall in the role of Deputy Force Commander in MINURSO,” NA stated, “Brigadier General Esho is undeniably a trailblazer. His appointment not only embodies Nigeria’s commitment to global peace and security but also paves the way for a more inclusive and representative future for peacekeeping missions worldwide.”
