●      FBI’s most wanted Nigerian fraudster sent to face trial in U.S.

Nigerian authorities have sent a local fraud suspect, Alex Afolabi Ogunshakin, to the United States to stand trial for his alleged involvement in a $6 million fraud case. 

Ogunshakin, who was on the FBI Cyber’s Most Wanted List is accused of participating in a business email compromise (BEC) scheme from January 2015 to September 2016.

 He, along with his accomplices, defrauded more than 70 U.S. businesses, resulting in a total loss of over $6 million, Acting U.S. Attorney Susan Lehr announced on October 10. 

Ogunshakin is accused of providing his co-conspirators with bank accounts for receiving fraudulent wire transfers. He was indicted in a U.S. district court in Nebraska in 2019 and was arrested in Nigeria. After the Nigerian government granted the U.S.’s extradition request submitted in May 2020, Ogunshakin now remains in detention as he awaits his trial in the United States.

●       U.S. African Development Foundation CEO visits Nigeria 

Travis Adkins, the President/CEO of the U.S. African Development Foundation (USADF), is scheduled to travel to Nigeria from October 16 to 20 for discussions with various stakeholders regarding economic development in Africa’s most populous nation.

 The U.S. mission in Abuja announced on September 16, Adkins will interact with USADF grant recipients involved in the agricultural sector. 

During his visit, he will learn about the impact of USADF’s efforts in addressing food insecurity, enhancing the livelihoods of rural farmers, and promoting the growth of agricultural businesses. 

Additionally, Adkins will participate in an All-On/USADF Conference as part of his inaugural visit, focusing on expanding access to energy. Adkins has expressed his excitement about visiting Nigeria, which hosts the USADF’s largest country program and encompasses key program areas such as agriculture, food security, entrepreneurship for women and youth, vocational training, job creation, renewable energy access, and support for the creative industries.

●      Soldiers rescue four abducted students in Nigeria’s northwest 

The Nigerian Army says it has rescued four university students who were kidnapped in the northwestern state of Zamfara on October 14. 

According to Yahaya Ibrahim, the Army spokesperson, troops ambushed the terrorists on their escape route, resulting in a fierce gunfight minutes after the kidnap in a dormitory near the Federal University in Gusau.

The late evening attack marked the second on the university in less than 30 days, following a late evening attack in Sabon-Gida on October 14. TruthNigeria had reported how 24 students, chiefly females were abducted, from their residence near the same university on September 22. Only 13 students have been rescued from that previous incident as of now.
