Property worth N400 billion ($506 million) has gone down the drain in Benue State because of the years-long crisis between herders and farmers, a government official disclosed on Wednesday.
The official also revealed that the crisis and land-grabbing activities have caused the destruction of vast expanses of arable land totalling N25 billion ($31 million), making food increasingly scarce. The figures were recorded from eight of 23 local government areas.
Nomadic Fulani herders have continued to assault farming communities, brutally killing male residents and sexually assaulting women in the majority-Christian state of Benue. Thousands have died while several others are sheltered in refugee camps in and outside the State as a result of the crisis.
“Thousands of our people were killed during these attacks; thousands of others sustained several degrees of injuries while hundreds are still missing,” Aondowase Kunde, Benue State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, said.
