Governor Babagana Zulum of Boko Haram-ravaged Borno State has disclosed that about 160,000 terrorists in the State and other Northeast States have laid down their arms. Zulum had put the figures at 140,000 in October. The number has not been independently verified and would presumably include women and children, according to security experts consulted by TruthNigeria.
“Generally, the security situation in Borno state has improved significantly,” the Governor told a delegation of Nigeria’s Ministry of Defense and top security chiefs on Tuesday.
Borno, known as Nigeria’s home of peace, is the epicenter of a conflict spearheaded by armed groups, most notably Boko Haram since 2009. The group’s mission is to Islamize the State and other Muslim-populated states in the northern region of Nigeria. Last month, Governor Zulum lamented that the terror group was swelling with recruits.
But yesterday, he said the continued onslaught on the terrorists by Nigeria’s military “has led to the surrender of over 160,000 Boko Haram terrorists and their families.”
“Within the last two weeks, I have gone around some nooks and crannies of the state, and reports reaching me from traditional rulers is that peace has returned to Borno state,” he added.
