An Abuja court has sent four men to jail for funding terrorists and their nefarious activities. The Boko Haram financiers: Modu Aisami, Zana Zarama, Umar Mohammed, and Bunu Kame were convicted on Monday after they pleaded guilty to the charges and pleaded the court for leniency.
The court handed down a 10-year prison term to Zarama for concealing the identity of a Boko Haram member, Modu Sulum. The duo of Mohammed and Kame were sentenced to serve 10 years.
Aisami got a 20-year prison term for buying food products from the terror group. The court accused him of having reasonable knowledge that proceeds from the transaction would be used to commit terrorist acts.
The convictions, according to Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, is the fourth phase of the trial of terrorists that began in 2017. Fagbemi said the resumption of the trial marks a crucial milestone in the years-long war against terrorism in the country. “Terrorism has cost us a lot as a nation,” he observed.
