Abba Gesh, a Nigerian soldier arrested and jailed for supplying weapons to Boko Haram jihadists, has escaped from prison, Sahara Reporters, an online newspaper, reports. TruthNigeria has yet to verify the report.
The newspaper did not disclose the date of the jailbreak. It only said the fleeing undercover terrorist was last seen on November 26 in Borno State. “He was seen with an AK-47 rifle and about four hand grenades. His intention is to kidnap locals for ransom,” a memo by the military seen by Sahara Reporters reads.
The jailbreak raises broader concerns about military personnel sabotaging the efforts of the government to tackle terrorism, banditry and kidnap-for-ransom crimes in Nigeria. It is not uncommon for security agents to be nabbed for working for terrorists either as informants or arms suppliers, Nigeria’s former defense chief Lucky Irabor revealed last year.
