Gunmen abduct chief, two police officers in Taraba

Motorcycle-riding bandits raided Pupule village in Yoro County of Taraba State on Monday night, kidnapping no fewer than 21 people.

Among the victims were the district head of Pupule, Chief Alhaji Umaru Abubakar Nyala, his pregnant daughter, son and one of his police orderlies. The bandits went from door to door picking up hostages without any resistance from the locals.

A resident who recounted the attack told a Leadership correspondent: “The people of Pupule were still in their beds when the gunmen invaded the area on motorcycles. They numbered over 20 and were heavily armed. They shot sporadically and compelled people to mount their motorcycles. Fear of being killed gripped everyone, and there was no resistance.”

Police spokesperson in Taraba, Abdullahi Usman said the anti-kidnapping team of the police and civilian guards, commonly known as vigilantes, are working around the clock to rescue the victims unhurt.
