A midnight attack on villages in Yobe and Borno States by terrorists of the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP) gang was repelled by the Nigerian Army during the weekend, with casualties on both sides.
In Yobe, the terrorists were blocked from attacking Katarko village by a team of volunteer citizen guards. A fire fight went on for 15 minutes. By the time soldiers got to the beleaguered community, two citizen guards had been killed. The terrorists retreated, some sustaining varying degrees of injuries.
ISWAP fighters who attacked a military base in Borno State wounded a soldier as the Nigerian Army battled to keep the terrorists off. The terrorists, however, lost two of their men.
A similar attack on troops moving on a highway in Borno also was thwarted. The troops were attacked by a gang of terrorists riding two gun trucks and 20 motorcycles. The number of terrorist casualties could not be confirmed.
