Nigeria’s defense minister asks for more money for military to fight bandits

Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, the Minister of Defense in Nigeria, is optimistic that the country would win the war against insecurity but requested more money for the defense ministry to make this happen.

President Bola Tinubu allotted N78.5 billion ($97,819,313) to the Ministry of Defense in the proposed 2024 budget. The defense minister on Wednesday asked the legislature to “review the ministry’s budget given the prevailing economic situation to enable the ministry to function effectively.”

Badaru cited the country’s soaring inflation as the reason for soliciting the raise. Inflation has impacted the military’s operational costs, and diesel and gasoline prices. “You are already aware of the inflationary trend and the cost of diesel, petrol, and operational costs. The overhead is very low, and we urge you to support us to see how we can improve our overhead,” he said.

The Minister assured that all funds, if his request is approved, would be “utilized fully, and we will be accounted for appropriately.”
