The mounting crime of terror gangs in Zamfara State, Northwest Nigeria have forced the State Government to close down eleven cattle markets across the state indefinitely.
Munnir Haidara, the information and culture commissioner in Zamfara, explained that state authorities took the decision because intelligence reports showed that bandits sell off rustled cattle in the markets to get money to replenish their arms and ammunition.
The affected markets are in Tsafe, Mafara, Anka, Shinkafi, Maradun, Birnin Magaji and Gusau Counties in the state. “The State Government finds it necessary to close down these markets due to security reports that the bandits are conniving with some unscrupulous elements to sell off their rustled cows in those markets,” Haidara stated.
The government official is optimistic that if residents cooperate with the security agencies – who have been ordered to arrest anyone lurking around the markets – Zamfara will be bandits-free.
