The Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) jihadists blew up a power transmission tower in Nigeria on Thursday morning, the second explosion in a week. ISWAP, a breakaway faction of Boko Haram, has for many years acted as the chief insurgency dominating the Lake Chad region in Nigeria’s Northeast.
An officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), a paramilitary agency, simply identified as Nurudeen was killed in the fatal explosion. Nurudeen reportedly stepped on an explosive at the scene of the vandalized electricity tower.
As reported by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert in Lake Chad, the destroyed electrical transmission lines are along the road linking Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno State and Damaturu, the capital city of Yobe State. The Northeast cities are 81 miles apart.
On December 21, the terrorists pulled down a 330kV transmission tower in Katsaita village, Yobe State with explosives, cutting power supply to some parts of Borno and Yobe.
