A fabricated bomb planted by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram on the Pulka/Firgi road in Gwoza county of Borno State has killed 13 farmers.
The devastating incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, Jan. 29. The farmers’ van unsuspectingly stepped on the buried explosives and almost immediately detonated.
Seven farmers including the driver of the van died on the spot, according to Lake Chad security and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama. The injured six who were rushed to the hospital for medical attention also gave up the ghost.
Borno State has been embroiled in an Islamic insurgency by Boko Haram (western learning forbidden) and its breakaway faction Islamic State of West Africa (ISWAP) since 2009.
The group’s mission is to establish their radical interpretation of Islamic law, or Sharia, in the region. At least 35,000 people have been killed and more than two million displaced due to the extremist violence concentrated in the Northeast state.
