Military Strike Kills ISWAP Leader, Ba’a Shuwa, Scores of Fighters 

The Nigerian military has reportedly gunned down the leader of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Nigeria called Ba’a Shuwa in an airstrike operation.

Counter-insurgency expert in Lake Chad Zagazola Makama said the strike carried out on Jan. 2 at  Kwatan Dilla, in  Abadam county of Borno State, also killed dozens of Ba’a Shuwa’s men.

The slain ISWAP leader assumed leadership of the jihadist group after it broke away from a rival Islamic sect Boko Haram in 2015 and the infamous Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau was killed in 2021.

He controlled Chiralia, Markas Kauwa, Abirma, Buk, Abulam, Dusula, Abbagajiri, Gorgore and other areas within the Timbuktu and Alagarno axis of southern Borno.
