Barely a week after launching the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) in Abuja to contain the upsurge of kidnapping, the Nigeria Police Force is looking at replicating something similar in Kaduna to crack down on the growing number of bandits in the Northwest State.
A police chief Yahaya Abubakar said on Tuesday that the move was motivated by the massive success Abuja’s squad has recorded in a few days of operation.
Abubakar said that shortly, there would be an anti-banditry squad in all the 36 states of the federation with a special preference given to banditry-prone States.
The Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State, Audu Dabigi, welcomed the plan though he said there has been a steady decrease in banditry, kidnapping for ransom, and other criminal activities in the State in recent times.
Dabigi said since he resumed duty as Kaduna State CP on Dec. 6, 2023, the police have rescued 18 kidnapped victims and arrested 16 suspected kidnappers and 19 armed robbery suspects.
“We will never relent until the safety of lives and property are guaranteed,” he assured.
