Nigerian Senate decries Plateau carnage, summons security chiefs

The Nigerian Senate is demanding accountability from the heads of military, security, and intelligence agencies in the country over the terror witnessed in 28 Christian communities in Plateau State that began December 23 and continued sporadically for 8 days.

Diiket Plang, the senator representing Plateau Central senatorial district, drew the Senate’s attention to the killings during plenary on Saturday. The lawmakers who took turns to air their views expressed their disappointment at the security chiefs.

“Anybody who is assigned responsibility as a security chief and he cannot deliver he must be sent out,” said Senator Abdul Ningi, who represents Bauchi Central senatorial district.

The Senate summoned the Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar; and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Rufai Abubakar; Director General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi; and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu to explain their apparent lapse in preventing the tragedy. The date for the closed-door meeting was not given.
