Nigerian troops of “Operation Whirl Stroke” (OPWS) rescued nine victims of a banditry attack earlier this week when they busted a hideout of a kidnapping gang in the Owukpa forest in Benue State.
Owukpa is a community in Ogbadibo County of Benue, which is 155 miles west of Makurdi, the State headquarters.
The victims were abducted in a commercial vehicle along the Otukpa–Enugu highway on January 11.
The Force Commander of OPWS, Major General Sunday Igbinomwanhia told local press on Thursday that the OPWS teamed up with the police and local civilian guards for the rescue operation.
“During the firefight, the kidnappers fled their hideout due to our superior firepower, abandoning their victims in the process,” said Igbinomwanhia.
