The Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Nigeria, Olukayode Egbetokun has stepped up the aggressive posture against kidnapping gangs in Nigeria by setting up a Special Intervention Squad (SIS) amidst assurances of improved security.
The SIS, said IGP Egbetokun, is the Nigeria Police Force’s “bold strategy” to end the menace of kidnappings and killings in the capital city of Abuja. The squad is a team of specially trained mobile police personnel.
“The Special Intervention Squad stands as a testament to our rejection of criminality in all forms,” he said during the launch of the unit on Wednesday, “It is a declaration of our commitment to reclaiming our streets, neighbourhoods, and cities from the clutches of lawlessness.”
The police chief assured residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of improved security going forward, promising that the initiative will be extended to other 36 states of the federation. “This operation is intended to bring a swift and decisive end to this era of terror,” Egetokun said.
