After enjoying maximum security on the road linking Nigeria’s capital Abuja and Northwest Kaduna State for about nine months, travellers are back on edge after a disturbing Sunday night attack.
The Abuja–Kaduna highway has been a regular spot for terrorist attacks and abductions. The road was reputed to be one of the most dangerous and risky for travellers during the past administration of Muhammadu Buhari (2015–2023) because of the incessant kidnappings and murders on the road.
Sunday’s attack was confirmed by a former Nigerian senator, Shehu Sani. The bandits reportedly laid ambush for travellers and abducted an unspecified number of people despite adequate security presence.
Those who narrowly escaped abduction had to run into bushes to hide until the bandits cleared the road. Sani said the attack happened at 9:00 p.m. on Sunday but failed to say the specific number of persons kidnapped.
