86 Government Offices Get 10-Day Ultimatum to Pay Combined Electric Bill Debt of N47.1bn

The Aso Rock Presidential Villa, the office and residence of the president of Nigeria at Yakubu Gowon Crescent in Asokoro, Abuja, owes an electricity bill debt of N923,873,150 (US$615,710.19), the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) said on Monday.

AEDC gave the President of Nigeria until Wednesday, February 28 to clear the debt or face power disconnection.

Eighty-five other government ministries, departments, and agencies are also indebted to the electricity company.

The AEDC published a long list of the debtors in a Nigerian newspaper on Monday. It said it is constrained to make the publication because “our previous attempts to make them honour their obligations have not achieved the desired results.”

Notable among the debtors are the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Power, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Nigeria Police Force, United Nations (UN) Abuja liaison office, National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Managing Director, World Bank etc. The total debt amounts to N47,195,620,266.06 (US$31,453,262.02).
