9 Killed, Dozens Abducted as Armed Herders Attack Benue

At least nine persons have been killed, many houses burnt, and scores including children abducted in renewed terror attacks on communities in Agatu County of Benue State in central Nigeria.

The terrorists suspected to be Fulani herders invaded the Ugboju community and fired into houses while residents were asleep, an official said on Thursday.

Attacks by herders and fighting with farmers have been frequent in the Northcentral region since 2020 after a ban by the Benue State government on open grazing of cattle, especially around farmlands.

Agatu is the worst hit of the violent attacks. The latest attack took place between 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. local time on Wednesday.

“The armed herders surrounded the Ugboju community from different places and attacked the people, an official told the Nigerian media, “When they were done in Ugboju they moved to the deserted Okokolo and burnt down many houses.”

Ezinwanne Onwuka reports for TruthNigeria from Abuja.
