Labour Union Declares Victory After First Day Strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the top labour union in Africa’s most populous country, has directed all workers under it and affiliate unions to resume work today after a one-day mass rally to force the Nigerian government to negotiate a pay raise.

The labour group and its affiliates took to the streets on Tuesday to call the government’s attention to the escalating food prices, the continued weakening of the naira, and the spate of violent attacks by Fulani terrorists in the country.

The work stoppage paralyzed the economy, caused a loss of electric power, and the closure of banks and some key organizations.

At a late-night meeting on Tuesday, the executives of the NLC agreed to suspend the street action for the second day (today) and communicated the same to its members.

The labour union said yesterday’s protest sent a “strong message” to the authorities. It “thus attained the key objectives of the 2-day protest,” the group stated.
