President Bola Tinubu met with the 36 State Governors in Nigeria, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and some senior government officials on Thursday.
Top of the agenda was the perilous state of the country’s economy chiefly occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy earlier last year and the alarming escalation of terrorist violence.
The Head of the State gave his approval for the governors to look into the creation of a state police that will cater for the security needs of each state of the federation just as it is in the U.S., putting a stop to the years-long debate on the issue.
It is unclear when the state police will be established to stem the wave of insecurity in the country.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris said, at a press briefing after yesterday’s meeting, that the authorities still needed to work out the modalities of the agreement before implementation.
According to Idris, “More work needs to be done in that direction. A lot of meetings will have to happen between the Federal Government and sub-nationals to see the modalities of achieving this.”
