A Kano High Court has sentenced a 47-year-old Chinese national, Frank Geng-Quangrong, to death by hanging for the murder of his Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Sani, aged 22.
Justice Sanusi Ado-Ma’aji delivered the judgment on Tuesday, saying “The defendant’s testimony is inconsistent. I hereby find him guilty.”
Geng-Quangrong, who resided in Kano Railway Quarters, had been charged with culpable homicide. The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.
According to the prosecution counsel, the Attorney-General of Kano State, Haruna Dederi, the convict committed the crime on September 16, 2022, at Janbulo Quarters in Kano. Details regarding the motive for the killing remain undisclosed.
The prosecution presented six witnesses and four exhibits to support their case. The specific cause of Ms Sani’s death is not included in court documents currently available.
Justice Ado-Ma’aji, while delivering the verdict, recommended mercy on behalf of the convict to be considered by the Kano State governor. However, Geng-Quangrong has the right to appeal the sentence.
