Fire in Borno IDP Camp Kills 2 Children

A fire that swept through the Muna Alamdari Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno State, on Tuesday morning killed two children.

The fire razed all the 1,000 tents occupied by the IDPs and their families, including four blocks of 12 classrooms in the camp. Two children, a boy and a girl aged five years and four years, were killed by the inferno.

The devastating fire started at about 10:40 a.m. local time and destroyed every shelter and property in the camp in less than 15 minutes. The cause remains unknown.

Mohammed Barkindo, the director-general of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), visited the camp hours after the incident with food items which were distributed to the IDPs.

He said he acted on the directives of the state governor, Babagana Zulum. The DG did not make known government plans on how to resettle the homeless persons.
