119 Inmates Escape After Heavy Rains Damage Prison in Central Nigeria

A major security breach occurred at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State after a heavy rainstorm caused significant damage to the facility on Wednesday night. According to a statement released by the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) on Thursday morning, a total of 119 inmates escaped during the incident.

The Deputy Superintendent of Corrections Command Public Relations Officer for the FCT Command, Adamu Duza, confirmed the escape and attributed it to the destruction of part of the custodial facility’s perimeter fence by the heavy rains. The downpour, which lasted for several hours, wreaked havoc on the building, including the perimeter fence, creating an opportunity for the inmates to flee.

As of Thursday morning, 10 escapees have been recaptured, with authorities scrambling to recapture the remaining 109. The NCoS have assured the public that efforts are underway to recapture the inmates. The NCoS authorities have activated recapture protocols and are working closely with other security agencies to track down the missing inmates.
