Bandits Strike in Zamfara, Leaving 3 Dead

Zamfara in northwest Nigeria has been struck by another deadly attack. This time, bandits targeted Dauran and Zurmi towns, the headquarters of Zurmi County (Local Government Area), on Wednesday night.

The armed assailants stormed Zurmi at about 11:00 p.m. local time after a successful raid in Dauran, firing indiscriminately and terrorizing residents. The attackers targeted the Emir’s palace to kidnap the Emir, Alhaji Muhammed Bunu. But before their arrival, the Emir had already taken off to Gusau, the capital city.

The assault left three civilians dead, according to Zamfara State Police spokesperson Yazid Abubakar.  Abubakar also confirmed that a telecommunications service mast belonging to MTN was razed during the raid, disrupting network connectivity in the area and cutting off communication.

Residents told Channels Television that a large number of persons were abducted, but Abubakar clarified that the bandit-terrorists kidnapped only one resident.  Security forces reportedly confronted the attackers, although details of the engagement have not been released.
