Kenyan authorities apprehended Nadeem Anjarwalla, a high-ranking Binance executive, wanted in Nigeria. Anjarwalla, the regional manager for Africa, escaped from Nigerian custody in March while facing tax evasion and money laundering charges.
Sources confirmed the arrest to Punch Newspapers, with Interpol reportedly working on his extradition to Nigeria this week. Anjarwalla’s escape from a government-guarded guest house in Abuja sparked outrage in Nigeria. He was said to have fled while under religious observation during Ramadan prayers.
The escape fueled suspicion surrounding the Nigerian government’s recent crackdown on cryptocurrency platforms, including Binance. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) accused Binance of facilitating billions of dollars in untraceable transactions, potentially weakening the national currency, the naira.
Anjarwalla’s extradition and the fate of his colleague, Tigran Gambaryan, arrested in February, are yet to be determined.
