A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the detention of a Nigerian man, Emmanuel Osase, for 60 days while authorities investigate his alleged links to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
The judge, Inyang Ekwo, granted the request from Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Services (DSS), after a hearing on Wednesday (April 3). The DSS had filed an ex-parte motion seeking permission to detain Osase, accusing him of membership and propaganda activities for ISIS.
According to an affidavit presented by the DSS, Osase is suspected of promoting ISIS messages, opposing Nigeria’s democratic system, and calling for attacks on the country and its symbols of sovereignty.
The defense lawyer was not present during the initial hearing, as it was an ex-parte motion, meaning only one side presented arguments. However, Osase, who was arrested on March 11, has the right to legal representation throughout the investigation.
The next court appearance for Osase is expected within the 60-day detention period. It will be determined then whether authorities will press charges or release him. Nigerians are following this case closely, as it raises questions about national security measures and the fight against Islamic extremism in the country.
