Nigerian Senator Ned Nwoko has sparked controversy after intervening to secure the release of four family members arrested in March for manufacturing illegal weapons, including drones and modified AK-47s.
TruthNigeria reported the arrest, with the Nigerian Army saying that the main suspect Emmanuel Eboka, 22 years old, can modify an AK-47 magazine to hold 60 rounds of ammunition instead of the standard 30 rounds.
Senator Nwoko, who represents Delta North senatorial district in the federal legislature, said he secured the release of Eboka and others through “collaborative efforts”. He believes their talents can be used for good.
“An individual capable of modifying an AK-47 magazine, originally designed to hold 30 rounds, to accommodate 60 rounds using rudimentary equipment, holds immense potential for greater achievements. Such individuals can do more with proper legal support and access to adequate resources,” the Senator explained.
He also plans a bill that would provide support and guidance to talented Nigerians, potentially including those with unconventional skillsets. The details of this proposed bill are yet to be revealed.
The Senator’s actions have drawn mixed reactions. Some have commended his efforts to identify and support talented Nigerians, while others have expressed concern about the potential national security implications of releasing individuals with knowledge of manufacturing illegal weapons.
