Nigeria’s Parliament Pushes Military to Get Tech Savvy for Better Security

Nigeria’s House of Representatives is urging the military to ditch outdated tactics and embrace cutting-edge technology to tackle the country’s security woes.

Lawmakers are concerned that traditional methods are not enough to combat insurgencies, banditry, and other threats.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the Army, Hon. Abdullahi Mamudu wants the military to invest in drones for intelligence gathering and surveillance, particularly in vulnerable regions.

Mamudu’s call on Thursday comes with the caveat of proper funding allocation as a tech revolution does not come cheap, but he said it is not a challenge.

This tech push is not coming out of the blue. The need for Nigeria to up its game has been on the front burner for a while.

In February, the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, led a Nigerian delegation to the second edition of the World Defense Exhibition in Riyadh,  Kingdom of Arabia, to explore tech solutions, especially the latest security technologies.

Nigeria faces a complex security landscape, and Nigerian authorities believe equipping the military with modern technology is key towards enhancing national security.
