Police Officer Killed in Ebonyi as Gunmen Attack Checkpoint

An Ebonyi State police checkpoint was attacked on Thursday, April 11th, by unknown gunmen. The assault resulted in the death of one police officer and the burning of a patrol vehicle. The attack happened at a junction along a major expressway in the Southeast State.

According to police reports, the gunmen arrived in a silver vehicle and opened fire on the officers. Though officers fought back, they were unable to save their colleague.

“The hoodlums shot sporadically at the officers, who engaged them fiercely and were able to repel them,” DSP Joshua Ukandu, spokesman for the Ebonyi State Police Command, said. “However, one of the officers was fatally wounded, and a patrol car was set ablaze.”

Authorities responded swiftly, deploying extra officers to search for the attackers. While normalcy has returned to the area, an investigation is underway to apprehend those responsible.

Local sources initially reported a second officer missing, but this has not been confirmed. “More details will be made available soon,” said DSP Ukandu.

Ezinwanne Onwuka reports for TruthNigeria from Abuja.
