Six Nigerian soldiers, including two officers, were killed on Friday by terrorists during a patrol in Niger State, according to the Nigerian Army.
The troops, deployed from the 1 Division of the Nigerian Army, were ambushed by terrorists while on patrol near Karaga Village in the Shiroro Local Government Area. Though caught by surprise, the soldiers fought back, eliminating several terrorists, and capturing some of their equipment.
A statement issued by Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, confirmed the deaths. “The troops suffered a temporary setback as 6 personnel comprising two officers and four soldiers paid the supreme price,” Nwachukwu said. He added that two injured officers are currently receiving treatment at a military medical facility.
The military has launched operations to pursue the remaining terrorists. “The troops are currently trailing some of the terrorists who survived and fled after the encounter,” said the Army spokesman. He refuted claims of equipment failure as reported by several Nigerian media, stating that it was a deliberate ambush.
