Kano in Northwest Nigeria witnessed a social media controversy linked to arrest of popular TikTok personality identified as G-Fresh was detained by the Kano State Hisbah Board. The alleged offense? Making “inappropriate remarks” regarding the Quran.
The exact content of the controversial TikTok video is unclear, but Kano Hisbah spokesman Aliyu Usman claims G-Fresh recited the Quran’s opening Surah Fatiha disrespectfully during the last Eid al-Fitr celebrations in April.
“He has been hiding for long and we have been extending invitations to him,” Usman said. “We have no option but to go after him and arrest him.” G-Fresh was picked up from his residence on Sunday afternoon. Usman added that G-Fresh is likely to face court proceedings today.
The Kano Hisbah Board is a religious-enforcement agency responsible for promoting Islamic moral values in Northern Nigeria. They have previously come under scrutiny for actions perceived as overly restrictive, such as banning mannequins and regulating hairstyles.
