Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called on media outlets to be careful and responsible when reporting on terrorism.
During a meeting with media stakeholders in Abuja on Tuesday, the Minister pointed out that coverage of terrorism acts could accidentally glorify attackers or lower the morale of security forces.
“It’s important for all of us to know that terrorists are not just fighting a physical war, they are also fighting a psychological war,” stated Minister Idris. “Therefore, it beats my imagination when media managers sometimes subconsciously promote the activities of these terrorists.”
He stressed that while it is important to keep the public informed about threats and ongoing situations, the media should be careful with the language and images they use to avoid sensationalizing or glamourizing terrorist organizations. “Without propaganda, terrorism will not thrive,” he said.
This appeal comes as Nigeria continues to face security challenges, including terrorism. The government is working hard to combat these threats, and the media plays a crucial role in shaping public discourse on the issue.
