The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced plans to implement a nationwide drone surveillance system to enhance security and combat crime.
The initiative, aimed at strengthening public safety, will utilize advanced drone technology to monitor high-risk areas, track criminal activity, and respond swiftly to emergencies, parallel to what is operable in the United States.
The Police Inspector-General, Kayode Egbetokun, said that the drone system will be integrated into the force’s operations to enhance crime prevention, detection, and response. The system will also support border security and anti-terrorism efforts.
With the deployment of drones, “the ungoverned spaces will soon become governed”, Egbetokun said, referring to hard-to-reach areas. The drones will be equipped with high-resolution cameras, sensors, and real-time data transmission capabilities that would enable the central police force to monitor all parts of the country from Abuja, the nation’s capital.
A dedicated drone unit will be established and staffed by trained personnel to operate and maintain the system. The drone surveillance system is expected to play a critical role in supporting the NPF’s efforts for improved security and public safety.
