Yobe Police Net Notorious Gang Leader

Yobe State Police say they have scored a significant victory in their fight against terrorism with the arrest of Haruna Mohammed, believed to be the leader of a dangerous gang.

A statement released on June 17, 2024, describing Mohammed’s apprehension on June 16, in Nangillam village, Tarmuwa county (Local Government Area) of the Northeast State. The operation was conducted by the State Intelligence Department (SID) following a tip and subsequent investigation.

Authorities accuse Mohammed’s gang of terrorizing communities across Yobe and neighboring states. Their tactics reportedly involved making threatening phone calls and extorting money and valuables from victims. One resident from Siminti village reportedly came forward alleging Mohammed demanded N3 million (US$1,992) under threat of violence.

According to Yobe State Police spokesperson Dungus Abdulkarim, Mohammed has confessed to the crimes and identified other gang members. These individuals are currently being pursued by law enforcement.
