In a sign of potential progress against the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria, a Boko Haram fighter recently surrendered to troops of 21 Armored Brigade in Borno.
This follows on the heels of a similar surrender by three terrorists to troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) on June 27th and coincides with the ongoing military operation codenamed “Lake Sanity II”.
According to a report by Zagazola Makama, three Boko Haram fighters surrendered at separate locations within the MNJTF’s area of operation. Two young men, Rawagana Mustapha (18) and Mustapha Ali (20) surrendered in Cameroon’s Sector 1, while a third fighter, Ibrahim Malam (28), surrendered to the 403 Amphibious Brigade in Baga, Nigeria (Sector 3). Initial investigations revealed that Malam had been affiliated with Boko Haram for at least six years.
A lone terrorist, Ibrahim Tide (20), surrendered to authorities on June 30, 2024. The surrender reportedly took place in Bama County (Local Government Area), Borno State, with the individual handing himself over to troops of 21 Armored Brigade.
The surrender of Boko Haram terrorists comes as the MNJTF and the Nigerian military have intensified their strategy against the group, with a focus on clearing the terrorists from their remaining strongholds in the Lake Chad region. As TruthNigeria has reported, the southern region of Lake Chad and the land south to the border with Cameroon is the operating area of Boko Haram, whose force has been much reduced since 2021. ISWAP is the larger of the two insurgencies claiming to have linkage to Islamic State. Boko Haram has created a relatively new base of operation in Shiroro County in Niger State.
