Tensions are rising in Nigeria as civil society groups and youth activists gear up for a nationwide protest tagged #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria. Set for August 1, 2024, this demonstration aims to spotlight issues such as corruption, insecurity, unemployment, and poor infrastructure.
The protest organizers are rallying Nigerians from all backgrounds to demand accountability and better governance. They have a list of demands, including the resignation of key government officials, a complete overhaul of the security system, and new policies to tackle economic difficulties.
The Nigerian government is clearly uneasy. In response to the planned protest, President Bola Tinubu has warned citizens against violence or disturbing the peace. “Let’s learn from India and Sudan’s experiences. We are a country with more than 200 million people. Therefore, we can’t afford to have this kind of situation,” he said, promising that he is working on addressing the nation’s challenges.
State Governors are echoing President Tinubu’s sentiments. The Kogi State Governor’s office urged people not to join the protest, stating that both federal and state governments are already addressing economic issues.
“A protest would have been proper if the Government was making no efforts. A protest at this point is an attack on the foundation of our rebuilding process,” said Kingsley Fanwo, Commissioner for Information and Communications.
As the nation braces for the protest, security agencies are on high alert, ensuring measures are in place to protect lives and property during the demonstrations.
